Alexis Casillas is an associate with the Leigh Law Group. Both her professional and personal experiences make her a highly motivated and trained attorney advocate.
Having grown up with a developmentally disabled sibling, Alexis has a strong commitment to helping children with special needs and a unique perspective on the special education process. She is familiar with Applied Behavior Analysis and play therapies, and has worked with nonprofit advocacy organizations like Best Buddies and Autism Speaks.
Alexis attended Columbia Law School, where she trained to work with families by Advocates for Children of New York. As a law student, she volunteered with the Autism Legislation Project during her summers, logging the most pro-bono hours of any student in her class. She also spent her final year as a student at Stanford Law School, where she participated in the Youth and Education Law Project.
In addition, Alexis comes to the Leigh Law Group with litigation experience from a number of different venues. Alexis served as an extern to the Honorable Kim Wardlaw on the Ninth Circuit. Since graduating, she has remained committed to special education law by handling IEPs for family members, following legal and policy developments, and working with groups interested in developing programs for autistic adults.
Alexis has experience in civil litigation. She worked for various government offices, including the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, where she attended a forum on disability access and public transportation, and the Department of Health and Human Services, where she worked on Medicare access cases. Alexis has also worked with the American Civil Liberties Union in Orange County on issues of educational equity and discrimination.
After law school Alexis gained experience working with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office, where she was a member of the Battery, Assault and Theft Unit and conducted research on the admissibility of testimony by individuals with language disorders and disabilities.
