Carolyn Makens is a Parent Advocate and Paralegal at the Leigh Law Group. Carolyn has a Bachelor of Art Degree from Duke University as well as a Law Degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. Carolyn, although licensed to practice law in Tennessee and Illinois, is currently not a practicing attorney in the state of California.
Carolyn prior to having children worked at SunTrust Bank as a Vice President and Trust Officer. During that time she developed a compassion for individuals with disabilities while gaining experience with Conservatorships and Special Needs Trusts.
Carolyn became interested in the special education field after her second child was born. Through her children and working with families with children with special needs, she has gained extensive experience with IDEA as well as Aspergers, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Non Verbal Learning Disability, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Motor Planning difficulties, Speech and Language Disorders, Dyspraxia and appropriate Behavior Intervention Plans and Behavioral Management Techniques for in the home and school setting.
Carolyn's role as a parent advocate includes, but is not limited to,
attending IEP meetings and conducting records review to assist the parent in determining the child's unique needs. She helps parents with interactions between schools and regional centers, supporting parents in all aspects of advocacy. She conducts extensive research and review to determine how to best serve disabled children. As a parent advocate, Carolyn is in the unique position of advocating for parents at a lower cost to parents than the cost of an attorney; however, she works closely with attorneys in the office as litigation support giving her a broad perspective to all aspects of how to strategize about a case.
